Alice In Wonderland

A Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, various animals and of course Alice, there are plenty of costumes to choose from in Lewis Carroll’s classic tale. Down the rabbit hole we go and into a fantasy world that is filled with nonsense which gets “curiouser and curiouser” the farther we go.

Alice in Wonderland was written in 1865 and the traditional costume for her is a simple blue dress, white apron and a black bow. Simply add a pair of white knee length socks, some black shoes and a blonde wig, unless you have long blonde hair to begin with. More recent adaptations of the tale such as Tim Burton’s movie have added a Gothic twist making these costumes more popular for Halloween. Suggested variations are stripped socks.

The Mad Hatter

Hatta, the Hatter is the name of the character in the book who has come to be known as The Mad Hatter, since the Cheshire cat called both him and the rabbit mad. For this costume priority number one is obviously finding a big top hat then add a jacket, some mismatched socks, stripped trousers that are too short or rolled up and possibly a clowns wig. A female variation on the Mad Hatters costume can be a tin top hat, tuxedo jacket or waist coat, thigh high boots and a walking stick. Both men’s and women’s costumes can be touched up using colorful scarfs.

The Queen of Hearts catchphrase is “Off with their heads” which makes her character perfect for Halloween if you choose to carry a fake dismembered head around with you. Or, just go with an elegant look and an bossy attitude to take charge of the party in regal style.

Sexy Alice or Hatters are easily make by just shortening the dress. For the rabbit, think playboy bunny with hearts and a round clock and for the Cheshire cat we suggest that you don some furry striped leg warmers to avoid being just another plain old cat.
